Everglades Contrary to what the average visitor might expect, the Everglades
is not a huge swamp inhabited only by large snakes and alligators, but
is rather a masterpiece of nature's beauty in a mysterious forest containing
many forms of wildlife and birds in their natural habitat. The "River
of Grass." Fifty miles wide in places, one to three feet deep in
the slough's center but only 6 inches deep elsewhere, it flowed south
100 feet per day across Everglades sawgrass toward mangrove estuaries
of the Gulf of Mexico. Compared to the historic Everglades, about 70%
less water flows through the ecosystem today, shrinking the Everglades
to about half of its original size.
