Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is a colorful, steep-sided gorge, carved by the Colorado River, in northern Arizona. The landscape varies from dense evergreen forests of juniper and piñon (shown here in green) to arid plateaus speckled with desert plants like agave and Spanish bayonet. The canyon, created by the Colorado River cutting a channel over millions of years, is about 277 miles long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles and attains a depth of more than a mile. Nearly 2,000 million years of the Earth's history has been exposed in the layers of schist, limestone, and sandstone as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut through layer after layer of sediment as the Colorado Plateaus have uplifted to create a canyon that is 5000 feet deep in some places.
